A Teeny
Tiny Baby
By Amy Schwartz
Published in 1994 by Orchard Books
95 Madison Aven. NY, NY 10016
Reviewed By Stephanie D’ArcangeloThis
lighthearted book tells the story of what babies like
and do not like from the perspective of the baby. It
contains many positive illustrations of baby breastfeeding,
sleep sharing and baby wearing. What is special about
this book is that the baby “says” he likes
to nurse often and even at night. The bbay also prefers
to sleep with his parents rather than the cradle. The
book entertains children while giving parents an accurate
and positive picture of attachment parenting.

We
Like to Nurse
By Chia Martin
Reviewed by PA-MILC
The very positive and normal
images of nursing are printed in crisp bright colors
with simple text. The animals portrayed in the book
also take on some human feelings and characteristics,
like “purring with delight,” cuddling, protecting,
being sheltered, and hugging as they nurse. The book
ends with a human mother and baby nursing with the caption
“We like to nurse”: So normal, so natural.
A very sweet book to read and talk about with younger
children, and an easy reader for preschoolers and early
elementary students just learning to read.

Birth
Chairs, Midwives, and Medicine
By Amanda Carson Banks
Reviewed by Misty DeLuca
This book provides a very interesting
and informative detail of the history of birth culture
in America as discovered through the study of birth
chairs. The book explains well the use and misuse of
birth chairs in natural childbirth. It also includes
intriguing pictorial and historical documentations of
birth chairs and how they evolved into the modern maternity
beds in use today in hospital births.

The
Labor Progress Handbook
By Penny Simkin & Ruth Ancheta
Reviewed by Misty DeLuca
This is an excellent and well-titled
book. It has wonderful flow charts and many diagrams
that help you to determine what steps to take when you
are faced with a slow-progressing labor. It explains
fetal positions and malpositions and ways to encourage
the baby to rotate and descend. It has sections on emotional
dystocia during 1st & 2nd stages and numerous ways
to treat prolonged 1st & 2nd stages of labor. A
very comprehensive book! And a must for every Doula’s
library and birth bag. This book would also prove helpful
to Midwives, Nurses, and involved Physicians and parents.

Rediscovering
Birth
By Sheila Kitzinger
Published May 2001 by Little, Brown and Company (UK)
Reviewed by Misty DeLuca
This book challenges our way
of thinking simply by exposing us to other customs and
cultures around the world. It is full of historical
and cultural practices and does a great job comparing
and contrasting the natural childbirth that occurs around
the world with the medicalized birth practices that
are common practice in the U.S.A. A truly informational
and inspiring read that I would recommend to all who
are interested in becoming more enlightened about birth!
