library gets books on breast-feeding
HOLLIDAYSBURG – This
week is World Breast-feeding Week and the Pennsylvania Mid-State
Lactation Coalition is donating books about breast-feeding
to local libraries.
PA-MILC is comprised of lactation
consultants, physicians and nurses dedicated to supporting
and promoting breast-feeding.
This week’s theme, “Breast-feeding,
Education for Life,” was chosen by the World Alliance
for Breastfeeding Action in an effort to raise awareness about
the significance of breast-feeding for child development and
to integrate knowledge that supports breast-feeding into educational
settings.
Research studies have shown that
breast-feeding increases IQ, reduces childhood illnesses and
helps children in developing learning readiness.
The two books donated to the Hollidaysburg
Area Public Library represent selections for both children
and adult readers. The children’s selection, “We
Like to Nurse” by Chia Martin and illustrated by Shukyo
Lin Rainey, presents pictures that show breast-feeding is
an important part of life for many different kinds of animals,
and for humans too. Short, simple sentences make it an appropriate
book for toddlers and very young children.
“The Complete Book of Breast-feeding,
Third Edition” by Dr. Marvin S. Eiger and Sally Wendkos-Olds
was added to adult circulation. Published in 1999, it is the
most current book available on the subject at the Hollidaysburg
library.
A team of book reviewers including
Debbie Young, librarian; Bette Baronner, adult services; and
Barbara Bundy, children’s services approved the books
for curculation.
